COLLINS $10K CHAMPIONSHIP - AUG 8-9
New Bern, NC – The NC Bass Challenge made its stop on the Neuse River this past Saturday, where a deep field of anglers launched from Lawsons Creek in New Bern, NC and put on a show at the scales, headlined by several monster kickers and a winning bag that broke 25 pounds.
88 teams competed in the event, and when the dust settled, Brock Rouse and Parker Mills claimed the victory with a five-bass limit weighing 25.15 pounds — a 3.07-pound margin over the second-place team. The duo anchored their winning bag with a 6.61-pound kicker and took home $4,000 in prize money for first place plus an additional $8,000 in Triton Gold contingency money!
After the event Brock Rouse spoke with us about their day on the water: “Tuesday morning I checked the marine forecast, and it was showing higher winds than I like for making a run. I decided to go back to my roots and check some areas where I cut my teeth bass fishing, places where Parker and I have won a couple of local tournaments this time of year. Sure enough, after four hooksets on Tuesday I had nearly 20 pounds, and I left with high expectations. The first hour started slow and we had to adjust and move around, but after some key adjustments we started dialing them in and had 22.5 by 9:25 a.m. We made a big cull around 11 a.m. with a 5.5-pounder that gave us what we needed. We bounced around the rest of the day and caught a pile of 2¾- to 3½-pounders to end the day.“
Justin Coley and Tony Coley brought a five-bass limit weighing 22.08 pounds to claim second place, anchored by a 5.58-pound kicker. Rounding out the top three were Brody Brown and Carl Whittington with 19.19 pounds, a bag that included a 5.78-pound largemouth.
The Neuse River gave up plenty of quality kickers on the day, headlined by the Tournament Big Fish — a stout 8.04-pound largemouth weighed by Josh Brown and Kyle Smith, who finished fourth overall. Adam Harris and Timothy Harris weighed a 6.00-pounder, Doug White and Mike Cathcart brought a 5.91-pound bass to the scales, and Adam Baldwin and Jason Tripp added a 5.54-pound largemouth. Michael Umstead and Chris Phillips (5.51) and Ronald Jones and Zach Wallace (5.29) rounded out the day’s big-fish list.
The Neuse River showed out for the NC Bass Challenge, with a competitive field from top to bottom. The top 15 teams took home cash prizes, and it took 12.81 pounds just to crack the money. A total of 55 teams brought fish to the scales, with 46 of those teams managing five-bass limits — a strong sign of the fishery’s health and the consistency of the bite throughout the day.
